Major Jaroslav Čermák Retrospective Opens in Prague

Prague City Gallery (GHMP), in collaboration with the National Gallery Prague, presents Jaroslav Čermák: Myths of European Reality, the first major retrospective of the celebrated 19th-century Czech painter in almost a century. The exhibition runs from 4 November 2026 to 28 February 2027 at GHMP Knihovna in Prague’s Old Town.

Čermák, who established a successful career in Paris, became renowned for his dramatic historical paintings inspired by the Balkans and the struggles against Ottoman rule. The exhibition brings together works from leading European collections, including the Louvre, museums in Brussels, Antwerp and Zagreb, alongside paintings from Czech institutions.

Highlights include the monumental Spoils of War (1868), awarded a gold medal at the Paris Salon, The Wounded Montenegrin (1873), and a five-metre-wide preparatory drawing for Čermák’s unfinished final composition. Portraits, landscapes and drawings reveal further dimensions of his artistic career.

The retrospective also presents new findings from several years of research and conservation, exploring Čermák’s international reputation, artistic influences and place in European art history.
